Open the DMG and drag Shotta to Applications. Quit an existing copy of Shotta before replacing it.

01 — CAPTURE

Your whole screen.
Or just a part.

Start a capture from the menu bar or a shortcut. Press Space to switch between screen, region, and window capture.
Use the magnifier to check the edges of your selection. Press Esc to cancel.

Click the display you want to capture. Choose any of your connected monitors.

Drag to select an area. Your selection can span more than one display.

Window

Point to a window. Click to capture it.

Explain with a note.

Mark a detail with an arrow or highlighter and add a text note. Blur or pixelate names, contact details, or other information you want to hide. Use Live Text to select and copy words from the image.

Open and edit saved images.

Open it with ⌘ O, drop it into the editor, or choose Shotta in Finder’s Open With menu. Screenshots and imported images share the same editing tools.

Opens PNG, JPEG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, TIFF, BMP, and GIF. Animated and multipage images open at the first frame or page.

Choose a file name and format.

Press ⌘ S for a new PNG in your chosen folder. Use ⇧ ⌘ S to choose the name, location, and format. Imported originals stay unchanged unless you choose to overwrite them.

Saves PNG, JPEG, TIFF, HEIC, and BMP. PNG and TIFF keep transparency; the other formats use a white background.

Click a thumbnail in history to reopen a recent capture or imported image and continue editing.

Capture, editing, and text recognition happen on your Mac. Shotta does not upload your images to a server. Open the app and start using it without an account.

Is Shotta free? Does it show ads?

Shotta is free for personal and commercial use. The app shows no ads, and you do not need an account.

Which Macs can run Shotta?

Shotta requires macOS 26 or later on an Apple Silicon Mac. Once opened, it runs in the menu bar.

Why does macOS warn me when I open Shotta?

The downloadable build is not notarized by Apple. Check that your copy came from the official Shotta download and that its checksum matches the release manifest. If macOS cannot verify the developer, try opening the app once, then run this command in Terminal to open System Settings:

  1. Choose Privacy & Security and scroll to Security.
  2. Choose Open Anyway beside the Shotta message, then confirm Open.
  3. If macOS says the app is damaged or will harm your Mac, do not open it. Download a fresh copy from the official source.
Can I allow the first launch from Terminal?

For a copy downloaded from this site or the official GitHub repository, verify its checksum and move Shotta to Applications first. If the unnotarized-app warning blocks it, this command removes the download quarantine attribute from Shotta only. It does not add Apple notarization or change the app's signature.

  1. Open Shotta from Applications after running the command. Screen Recording permission is still required for capture.
  2. If Terminal reports a permission error, use Open Anyway in Privacy & Security. On a managed Mac, your organization's policy may prevent launch.
Does Shotta need screen recording permission?

Capturing your screen requires permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording. Opening and editing image files does not require that permission.

Can I save an image as WebP?

Shotta can open WebP files, but it does not save in WebP format. Use Save As to choose PNG, JPEG, TIFF, HEIC, or BMP.
